Free Fall - Covid-19

Free Fall from 7000ft
Soaring through the sky

Trying to smile

Two months ago, my husband and I booked a sky diving stint with Durban's Sky Diving Club. With my countdown to 40, and a tick on my bucket list, I was amped and ready to jump 7000 ft from a tiny little aircraft. The experience was riveting and exhilarating, however, the free fall was daunting! Although I tried to smile and wave and enjoy the 10 second drop, I could feel the force of gravity pull on my entire body as I plunged to the earth at about 150 kph. In the next instant my tandem guide pulled the cord to the parachute, and my body was immediately hauled into an up-right position and I began to sore through the clear skies of the KZN Midlands. Once my position changed and I was no longer in free fall, I was astounded by the beauty around me. At that point, I knew why the birds sang! As I soared through the air gently sailing to the ground, I was in awe of the magnitude of God’s beautiful creation. The peace and quiet up there is harmonious.

When I think back on that hectic free fall, it reminds me of the unfortunate COVID-19 crisis we are now living in. What do you do when the entire world is in free fall into a place of uncertainty and Fear? Your next pay cheque, retrenchment, kids schooling, contacting Covid-19 are some of the anxieties that plague you.

Fear can stop us from having the courage to do what we know is right and can sometimes cripple us. The good news however, is that God knows all about this force in our life, and by relying on him, we can overcome by having faith in him.

Fear can paralyze us, if we let it. Fear isn’t just a feeling—it’s a powerful spirit. It affects our mind. The Bible, tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” What is it to have a ‘sound mind’? It is having the capacity to think, reason, and understand for oneself. Sometimes, circumstances and the crisis that satan brings, can cloud our minds, restricting our ability to think, reason and understand.

We need to reposition ourselves and turn our anxieties over to God, and then we will have a sound mind. When my tandem guide pulled the chord to the parachute, my position changed and I felt fear leave me, as I put my trust in the parachute to secure me. God is like the parachute and 'pulling the chord', is the action that we take that helps us rely on God. We need to let go and put our faith into action and trust God in all areas of our lives, then we can appreciate and be grateful for the things around us.

God IS Love. His Word says that “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love." (1 John 4:18).

He knows there will be situations in life that will be frightening to us, however, He will deliver us from every scary situation. “I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

Pray to him today and ask him to be a part of your situation, so that His Love can drive all fear away. You got this. Be Strong and Be Loved.

Our Prayer for Today

Lord, I thank You by faith that I am NOT going crazy and I am NOT losing my mind. The stress and pressure I’ve been facing is going to pass, and I know You will bring me through these challenging times. You promised me a sound mind, and that is exactly what You have given me. I can’t ever thank You enough or fully express my gratitude for the power, love, and sound mind You have given to me that will carry me safely through these times!
